The following are descriptions of the coats-of-arms of families of the name of Spalding. 1. SPALDING (France, Lyon Register). This shield or escucheon is French, of the Lyon Registe, and is or (gold) with an azure cross (blue in color), with five crosses crosslet super imposed upon the first. The crest is an or (gold) cross crosslet (Christ was crucified with two other men, one at each side), fitchee (elongated and pointed, as would be a sword). The motto or banner reads: Hinc Mihi Salus (Latin meaning, Hence My Salvation). The background color of the field is the color of gold (or), representing, the metal used to make the shield, probably brass and not gold.

2. SPALDING (Scotland). This shield is of Scottish origin and is or (gold) with an azure (blue in color) saltire, depicting the ecclesiastical symbol of the cross of St. Andrew, the patron Saint of Scotland. It is emblazoned with five crescents (an armorial symbol). The crest is a cross crosslet (Christ was crucified with two other men, one at each side), a gold (or) fitchee (elongated and pointed). Motto or banner: Hinc Mihi Salus (Latin meaning, Hence My Salvation).

3. SPALDING (Ashnillie Scotland). This shield is of Scottish origins and is or (gold), with a two-handed sword in pale azure (blue in color). ( Burke says argent, instead of or). The reference made by Burke to argent simply means a silver metal rather than gold (or).This shield apparently, Ashantilly, thus is perhaps related to Thomas of Georgia.

4. SPALDING. A Per fesse (Bishop's cap), azure (color blue) and or (gold), a pale counterchanged, three buckles of the second, two and one. The crest shows a gold bishop's mitre (or), banded gules, charged with a blue chevron (azure), and there on three bezants.

7. SPALDING (Lurnlethen and Craigan, Fifeshire). Gold bakground (or) with a blue cross (azure) with five crosses crosslet of the first. This is the same as No. 1 without the crest. Motto or banner: Hinc Mihi Salus (Latin meaning, Hence My Salvation).

8. SPALDING. A gold background (or), with a blue (azure) cross, the cross with five crosses crosslet of the first. The crest is a gold elephant's head (or), with crowned gules.

9. SPALDING This is also a Scottish origin; a gold (or) background, on blue (azure) cross with five crescents of the first.

10. SPALDING Gold (or), on a bend sinister blue (azure), three crosses potent gold (or), with two ravens ppr. The crest is a falcon belled and jessed ppr. This shield was taken from an old painting in possession of Col. Simeon Spalding. It would be interesting to think that Simeon was a falconer.
